Terms of Use

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use Ludwig on devices you own or control, for your own use.

You may not copy, modify, reverse engineer, decompile, redistribute, resell or sublicense the app, except where the law gives you a right to do so despite this clause.

Ludwig runs entirely on your device. It has no accounts, and we operate no servers that hold your practice data. How we handle information is set out in our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms.

Ludwig is free to download and free to keep using. The free tier has limits on how many pieces and stored scores you can have, and on some other features. Those limits are described in the app and on our website, and we may adjust them for new users over time.

When you first install Ludwig, you get a period of full access with every Premium feature unlocked, at no cost and with no payment details required. When that period ends, the app steps down to the free tier. Nothing you have logged is deleted, and any content beyond the free limits remains readable.

Premium removes those limits. You can buy it either as a monthly subscription or as a one-time purchase.

All purchases are made through the Apple App Store or Google Play. We do not process payments and we never see your payment details. Your purchase is also governed by the store’s own terms.

Monthly subscription. A monthly subscription renews automatically each month until you cancel. Payment is charged to your store account at confirmation of purchase, and again at each renewal. You can cancel at any time through your App Store or Google Play account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you keep Premium until then. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

One-time purchase. A one-time purchase unlocks Premium on the store account you bought it with, and does not renew. You can restore it on a new device using the same store account.

Prices. Prices are shown in the app before you buy and may change. A price change never affects a one-time purchase you have already made. For subscriptions, any change applies from the next renewal and the store will notify you as its rules require.

Refunds. Refunds are handled by Apple and Google under their own policies. We cannot issue refunds for purchases made through their stores. If you have a problem, contact the store you bought from. This does not limit any rights you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that apply to you.

A one-time purchase gives you Premium in Ludwig as it exists at the time of purchase, plus improvements and additional features we add to the app itself, for as long as we continue to publish it.

It does not cover any future service that has an ongoing cost to run, such as cloud sync or hosted storage. If we ever build something of that kind, it will be optional and priced separately, and Ludwig will keep working without it.

It also does not oblige us to publish the app indefinitely, or to support operating system versions or devices that Apple or Google no longer support.

Everything you put into Ludwig is yours. Your repertoire, practice sessions, notes, recordings and imported scores remain your property, and we claim no rights over them.

Because Ludwig stores your data on your device, we cannot access it, and we cannot recover it. If you lose your device, delete the app, or lose access to your own backup, your data is gone and we cannot restore it. Keeping your own backups is your responsibility. The app provides export and backup tools to help you do this.

Ludwig lets you photograph or import sheet music and other files. You are responsible for having the right to use whatever you put into the app.

Much classical repertoire is in the public domain, but a particular edition, engraving, arrangement or recording may still be protected, and the rules differ between countries. Importing a copy into Ludwig for your own practice is generally a private use, but we make no representation about your specific situation, and you should not import material you do not have the right to hold.

You are also responsible for anything you send out of the app, such as a practice summary shared with a teacher.

You agree not to use Ludwig to break the law, to infringe anyone’s rights, or to interfere with the app’s operation or security.

Ludwig uses a small number of third-party services, described in the Privacy Policy: Apple and Google for purchases, RevenueCat to manage them, and Sentry for anonymous crash reports.

Composer and work information is provided by Open Opus and is used under its terms.

Certain icons are used under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 licence. Attribution is given in the app and on our website.

These third parties are not under our control, and we are not responsible for their services.

We may update, change or remove features, and we may stop publishing Ludwig. We will try to give reasonable notice of anything significant.

Ludwig depends on your device and its operating system. We do not guarantee it will work on every device or with every future operating system version.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any guarantee, right or remedy you have under the Australian Consumer Law or any other law that cannot be excluded by agreement. If you are a consumer in Australia, our goods and services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded, including a right to a remedy for a major failure.

Subject to that, Ludwig is provided on an “as is” basis. To the extent the law allows, we exclude all other warranties, including that the app will be uninterrupted, error-free, or fit for a particular purpose.

To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you arising out of or in connection with Ludwig is limited to the amount you have paid us for the app in the twelve months before the claim, and we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data.

You can stop using Ludwig at any time by deleting it. We may end your licence if you materially breach these terms. Sections that by their nature should survive termination will do so.

Ludwig is suitable for musicians of any age. If you are under the age at which you can enter a contract where you live, please use the app with the involvement of a parent or guardian, who agrees to these terms on your behalf.

If you obtained Ludwig from the Apple App Store, the following applies. These terms are between you and us, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Apple has no obligation to provide support or maintenance for Ludwig. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price; to the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claim relating to the app, including product liability, any failure to conform to legal requirements, and any claim that the app infringes a third party’s intellectual property. You confirm that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as a terrorist-supporting country, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.

These terms are governed by the laws of Victoria, Australia, and you and we submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of that State. If you are a consumer somewhere else, you may also have the benefit of mandatory local laws.

If any part of these terms is unenforceable, the rest continues to apply.

These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between us about Ludwig.

We may update these terms. If we do, we will change the date at the top and, for anything significant, tell you in the app before it takes effect.
